While volunteering at DISCO over the past several years, I have watched kids wield their imaginations to create incredible poems, stories, and pictures week after week. They are intensely proud of what they create, and so excited to share their work with us, their friends, their families, and of course their teachers, without whom so much of DISCO would be impossible. As DISCO volunteer and fellow, I show kids the spectrum of creativity they have access to, and encourage them to keep creating and to take pride in their work. Over the course of a year, these kids, who may have never written a poem before, become published poets, and the transformation in their confidence and communication is an honor to behold every time.
