St. Joe's Prep Class of '95's Fundraiser
Calling the St. Joe's Prep Class of '95!
Let's help kids in Birmingham read, write, and create.
We are no longer accepting donations on this campaign, but there are other ways for you to support us today!
The Class of '95 is going to show off how good we are at reading and stuff.
The Epic Read-a-thon is a 24-hour, nonstop, out-loud, community reading that supports the Desert Island Supply Co.'s writing programs for kids in Birmingham, Alabama. Our classmate Brian Connell is the Executive Director of this amazing organization, and this year, we've got a St. Joe's Prep Class of '95 team sponsoring an hour!
What does that mean? For one hour, Brian Connell, Don McCloskey, and Nevin McGinley (so far) will be reading literature in support of DISCO's students. For that hour, our Irish mugs will be front and center at the public, virtual event. The theme of this year's read-a-thon is "The Great Outdoors," so we'll read something related to that. It could be "Into the Wild" or "Moby Dick," for example; or maybe we'll read "The Giving Tree" really slowly for an hour; or maybe the screenplay of "The Great Outdoors" starring John Candy. It can be anything having to do with the outdoors!
We really hope you'll help us.
Here's how you can participate:
- If you want to read at the actual event on 12/3-4, email Brian Connell at briandelaneyconnell@gmail.com, and he'll add you to the list. We're reading for an hour, so if 4 of us sign up, we'll each take 15 minutes. If all 179 of us read, we'll each get 20.1117 seconds. It's a virtual event, so no matter where you are, if you can read, you can join!
- Donate to the cause. Click that "Donate" button up above or the one over there to the right, and empty your savings account and your children's college funds into this fundraiser. Do it now.
More about DISCO (if you're still reading):
The Desert Island Supply Co. is a nonprofit creative writing and publishing center located in Birmingham, AL. Their in-school program, the All City Writers Corps, is a collective of more than 300 third-twelfth graders who participate in weekly creative writing workshops designed to unleash their imaginations. Each year, DISCO publishes student writing in beautiful poetry anthologies and collections. Like DISCO, we believe that writing is a very powerful tool for young people as they explore and document their worlds.
We hope you'll support our campaign in the spirit of being Men for Others. If it helps, let's think of Maher, Michini, Bennett, Christian, O'Brien, Griffin, and are other Englush teachers who taught us how to reed and right good, and do it for them to!
