One personal note: I worked with one group of kids that were rambunctious, loud, and totally unfocused. One student hung back quietly watching his friends. When it came time to start writing, he came up with the most beautiful words and expressions! When he read them out loud, his friends took it as a challenge to become focused and they followed with touching poems of their own. You never know who will influence (good or bad) a middle schooler! This time, it wasn't me but their quiet buddy!
The Woodlawn Writers Corps is a collective of more than 700 students at Avondale Elementary, Oliver Elementary, and Putnam Middle School. Every week during the school year, volunteers from the Desert Island Supply Co. facilitate in-school creative writing workshops for Corps members.
